Miami-Dade
County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Library Media Services
M-DCPS Library Media
Services mission is to collaborate with educators at all levels in assisting
students to become active and creative locators, evaluators, and users
of information. With these skills, as well as knowledge of the information
search process, students will become skillful consumers and producers
of information. This foundation will enable students to become lifelong
learners in a dynamic and ever-changing world.
The Library Media Services program facilitates this process by:
-
providing professional
resources in a variety of formats;
-
offering professional
growth opportunities;
-
networking with
community connections offering diverse resources; and
-
providing leadership
in evaluating and improving school library media programs.
Specifically, the Library Media Services staff will endeavor to:
-
improve student
achievement by guiding school library media specialists in integrating
information literacy skills throughout the curriculum;
-
improve student
reading skills by providing library media specialists with print,
nonprint, and electronic resources;
-
offer guidance
in developing reading motivation programs and materials;
-
promote the use
of technology to locate and use information; and
-
enhance the learning environment through staff development.
Library
Media Center
The
library media program seeks full integration into the curriculum, establishing
a partnership among educators, parents, and administrators. The library
media specialists work with other educators to design learning strategies
to meet the needs of individual students. We make a serious commitment
to the library users to the value of the universal and unrestricted
access to information and ideas. We hope to provide intellectual and
physical access to materials in all formats, provide instruction to
foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using
information and ideas. We strive to enable all students and faculty
to become effective locators, evaluators, and users of ideas and information
in this technological age.
This
mission is based on the following premises:
·
We live in an
information society.
·
As technology
changes the modes and pace for creating and storing information, our
strategies for accessing information must change.
·
The needs for
information problem solving, critical thinking and decision-making are
inherent in all areas of curriculum, and at all stages of life.
·
The study of
quality literature, both imaginary and informative, fosters readers
and writers across the curriculum.
·
Students, teachers,
and library media specialists must be partners in the research process
and the selection of literature.
·
Our continuing
mission is for classroom teachers and the library media specialist to
become co-designers of instruction in order to accommodate the needs
of traditional learners and those students with learning differences.
·
To meet this
mission, the curriculum of the library media center is organized into
two major sections:
-
Information
literacy, the ability to access, to evaluate, and to use information
from a variety of sources. (See Appendix D)
-
Literature appreciation to instill life long love of reading, regard
for written word, and appreciation of the thoughts and ideas presented
in literature.
Emphasis
will be placed in the following four areas so that students will learn
to become effective users of information. Students will:
1.
Be encouraged
to enjoy reading and to appreciate literature through group instruction
and individual guidance.
2.
Have free and
equal access to materials that meet intellectual, curricular, and recreational
needs.
